What is the Boardmasters Festival?
Boardmasters is a multi-genre music and extreme sports festival unlike anything else Europe has to offer. Mixing electrifying music from some of the world’s biggest names along with high-octane sports, it brings with it a unique atmosphere of sheer excitement year on year.
Set in Newquay, on the south-west coast of England, it welcomes a mix of professional boarders, riders and skaters with sports enthusiasts who want to enjoy a piece of the action alongside the best. Revellers get the chance to enjoy intimate, immersive sets along the beaches as well as stunning stage shows from headliners that will light up the evening.
Previous names to have performed here include the likes of Faithless, Deadmau5, Primal Scream, Snoop Dogg, Chase & Status, Craig David, Rudimental, Catfish and the Bottlemen, DJ EZ, Eats Everything, De La Soul and countless others.
2017’s Lineup and Information
The festival runs from Wednesday 9 – Sunday 13 August, with the Fistral Beach surfing action kicking off from the Wednesday.
Indie pop legends Two Door Cinema Club are on an all-time high with the release of their new Top 10 album ‘Gameshow’, seeing the band riding another massive wave of success. The band behind huge hits ‘What You Know’, ‘Something Good Can Work’ and more have soundtracked many a summer. Two Door Cinema Club never fail to deliver and are sure to kick-start Boardmasters in style when they headline the main stage on Friday 11 August.
The ‘Space Cowboy’ himself Jamiroquai will be bringing funk by the bucket load to Watergate Bay on Saturday 12 August. The multi-platinum groove masters have no shortage of smash hits like ‘Virtual Insanity’, ‘Deeper Underground’, ‘Space Cowboy’ and ‘Cosmic Girl’. The star has more tunes under his elaborate hat than you can shake a bucket and spade at, and will whip the crowd into a funked up party in no time.
Sunday headliners Alt-J show no sign of slowing down as the eccentric, folktronic three-piece recently scored a number 1 with their second album ‘This Is All Yours’, which earned them a well-deserved Grammy nod. Chilled and electrifying all at once; the shimmering backdrop of Watergate Bay is the only place you’ll want to be as Alt-J close the Boardmasters Main Stage on Sunday 13 August.
Boardmasters are also stoked to announce 16 more new acts. First up are punk upstarts Slaves who tore up the rule book with their raucous, mosh inducing and feel good tunes. Also announced are the beloved singer songwriter Jake Bugg, Andy C who is one of the most iconic figures in global dance music culture, Cumbrian indie pop four-piece Wild Beasts, Patrick Topping – one of the most in demand names in dance music, legendary DJ Roger Sanchez, possibly the most recognisable voice in dance Becky Hill, TQD (Royal T, DJ Q, Flava D), Theo Kottis, Tom Grennan, Solardo, Royal T, DJ Q, Flava D, Cadenza and pop duo Youngr, who will join Two Door Cinema Club, Jamiroquai and Alt-J for a weekend of unforgettable life-affirming performances from the biggest names in music, in the most epic festival setting the UK has to offer. Inspired by the freedom, adventure and creativity of surfing and music, Boardmasters was born in 1981. Expect parties that run late into the night and a beautiful beach to recuperate on during the day. The 5-day event is situated across two stunning locations in Cornwall – the surfing mecca of the UK, Fistral Beach, where world class International Surf Competitions take place, and arguably the most stunning location in the country to watch live music, Watergate Bay. Last year the grassroots surf and music festival welcomed over 150,000 festival goers to sunny Cornwall.
Andrew Topham, Boardmasters Festival Director, said:
“We are hugely excited to announce our three headliners and other world-class musical talent as part of what’s shaping up to be the best Boardmasters line up yet. Every year, the biggest names in music and surfing keep Cornwall firmly on the map as the festival continues to go from strength to strength. Boardmasters has an incredible community of dedicated fans who we look forward to welcoming everyone back for another summer of awesome surf and music action on two amazing sites – Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay.”
